Growing up in Florida, Kodak faced hard times from a young age. According to the Miami New Times, he lived in a Section 8 housing complex which was once described by the Sun Sentinel as a, quote, “haven for crack cocaine, crime, and squalor.”
He told The Fader that he had plans early on to make it in the rap game in order to make his own money. But the road to hip hop stardom was rocky – after numerous arrests, Kodak would later leave Florida for California, suggesting to The Breakfast Club that he did so because his hometown brings out the worst in him.
