In 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, Steve Rogers climbed aboard Johann Schmidt’s aircraft during World War II and crash-landed it to prevent it from dropping weapons of mass destruction on a plethora of major American cities.
However, despite aiming for the ocean, it actually landed in an ice field, where the heat of the engines melted the surrounding ice, causing the plane to sink into the ice before it refroze with the unconscious Rogers inside.
The super soldier was presumed dead but, almost seventy years later, he was found and revealed to be alive – and there’s a theory that suggests Nick Fury knew he would be.
It’s mainly based on the fact that, although S.H.I.E.L.D.’s intentions seemed to be the extraction of the Super Solder Serum from Rogers’ frozen corpse, that’s out-of-character for the organisation – in fact, Fury has actually shown himself to be openly contemptuous about the idea of reviving any initiatives to replicate the serum.
While they have USED super-powered agents (Ghost, the original Ant-Man etc), they don’t really create them – so Fury must have wanted Rogers, rather than the serum that made him superhuman.
