A leading US expert says it can and definitely was in a West Australian case that landed three brothers in prison. Ray, Peter and Brian Mickelberg have always claimed they were innocent of a string? that saw the Perth Mint turn over $650,000 of gold bullion in return for worthless cheques. But, how, then, could they explain away the most damning piece of evidence against them; a fingerprint matching Ray’s on one of the cheques? The trial judge told the jury they should consider the print to be unforgeable. But now, as Ian Leslie finds, the American fingerprint expert convinced there has been a fraud of epic proportions and other international experts agree the print on the cheque could have been put there by someone using a rubber cast of Ray Mickelberg’s finger.
