Thanos took a toll on the Avengers. He handed them their first unqualified defeat in Infinity War, took out one of their strongest members in Vision as well as Gamora from the Guardians of the Galaxy and Thor’s brother Loki. It had a devastating effect on the rest of the Avengers, including Tony Stark who not only gave up the Avengers, but Iron Man as well. Over the course of Endgame, Thanos managed to get his comeuppance, but only barely. There was more than one window where he or the Black Order could’ve made the difference, reacquired the Infinity Stones, completed a new Infinity Gauntlet and kept his perfect record against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
In some cases, he could have avoided having to prevent the undoing of The Snap in the first place. Every villain has their flaws. Thanos’ come with some advantages. His self-assured nature is a product of his drive to fulfill what he feels is his destiny. Having defeated entire planets as part of his regular work week, he can be forgiven for underestimating the resistance of Earth and its superheroes, but there are still mistakes that he made which undid him in the end. From monologues to resource management to timing, these are the cracks in the armor that allowed the Avengers and assembled heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to succeed and bring everyone back. Most of them involve Nebula. Thanos definitely had a Nebula problem.
